Introduction

Not only will this tour present to you the Akureyri Countryside, but by taking you to the local neighbourhood, to the farms and farmers you will learn to know better the Icelandic way of living. The settlers brought livestock with them from their homelands; such as sheep, cattles, goats, pigs, poultry, dogs, cats and horses. Because of no livestock importation for centuries the Icelandic farm animals are the direct descendants of the settlers animals and the original stock has been preserved that way. Through the centuries, Icelandic farm animals have had to cope with hard winters, famine and volcanic eruptions and are therefore unusually hardy.

Itinerary

In this quite so unorthodox visit to the farms and farmers of the Akureyri area we will get a glimpse of the country-side of Iceland and the life that is largely based on traditional livestock raising. For centuries Icelandic farmers have raised both cattle and sheep in so-called mixed animal husbandry, which is still the most common form of farming. Such farms usually also have some horses. Specialization has, however, increased significantly in recent years. The traditional farming with sheep, cows and horses will be visited as well as farmers that make their way to nurture the old ways of handcraft or breeding the settlement hens, goats or dogs. We will also come to an old traditional turf church and visit farmers that produce their own homemade ice cream. Our last stop will be at Jólagarðurinn, the Christmas Garden where melodies and aroma is in the air and the fire glows and crackles in the fireplace. From this magical world of Christmas we will say good bye to the farmers and their animals and return to Akureyri.
